Has the Sun Already Set on Nikki vs Jess?
I write this on April Fool’s Day, not to play any joke on you, but instead to tell you that the joke is on me! For I’ve discovered that I’ve been an absolute fool.
As you know, I launched my new novel Nikki vs Jess in December last year, and since then, I’ve been doing some research about how to market it. To my horror, I’ve learned that I should have planned and organized this launch at least six months in advance, and that for my book to be successful, its launch needed to be an integral part of a whole marketing package!
The experts also advise that it is of paramount importance to know who the book’s ‘target audience’ is, in order to ensure that marketing effort is most efficiently and effectively directed. But who are my book’s potential readers? “Everyone!” I initially claimed when first encountering this question. However, further research (and some common sense) quickly convinced me of the absurdity of my assertion. Yet although I’ve spent countless hours agonizing, I’m very sorry to report that I’m still no closer to a better answer for my book. I simply can’t seem to work out who is my target audience.
I’m a writer, not a marketer. But I do want people other than my friends and family to read Nikki vs Jess. I wrote my book to share a story, not to have it imprisoned in boxes in my study. I’ve clearly made mistakes, but now I’m trying to come up with ways to provide some kind of future for my book out there in the world. I confess that I’m worried that the sun has already set on Nikki vs Jess, on account of my ignorance… but I’m also hoping like hell that it hasn’t!
